Tanohata village was severely damaged by the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, with the development of the Sanriku Coastal Road (road reconstruction), the roadside station was reopened 10 years after the earthquake. With this plan we aimed to create a building that conforms to Tanohata’s serene terrain and created a building with a curved roof with varying height for each span.

The cross-sectional shape has a gambrel roof characteristic of buildings in areas with heavy snowfall. A continuous irregular frame roof with varying spans and heights creates different faces in each direction and an open commercial facility with a high ceiling inside. Frames with a span of 9~16m made of two 3-hinge truss arches are arranges at different angles.

All the wood inside, especially the pillars and lower trusses that are visible at eye-level are made of red pine from Iwate prefecture. It is a facility where you can feel a tangible connection to trees.

Outside, on the north side of the building, a lawn plaza was planned as a playground for the children. We aimed to create a facility where you can enjoy outdoor activities by creating a secure parking lot for camper accommodation attached to the roadside station with a barbecue area planned in the future. With these peripheral facilities, we hope to convey the charms of Tanohata village inside and outside and to develop positive activities for everyone in Tanohata village.
