The gymnasium of Nara High School could not be used due to lack of seismic performance, and the school building itself was to be relocated in 2021, so there was a need for a temporary gymnasium and a chance to apply a preceding study project "Temporary facility examination project using Nara trees" – a collaborative project between Nara prefecture and Waseda University. In regards to relocation, cost, and timber utilization, we used a scissor truss structure without notches with bolt-on joints using lumber from Nara prefecture (120x120mm, max length 6m). The end facades do not require a bearing element. The building does not require advanced technology, is open and versatile and has become a wide space wrapped by trees (In this construction laminated timber is used due to timber supply). The end facades are made from polycarbonate sheet and fill the inside with soft light. At their center a unit containing an entrance, shutter and ventilation fan is installed. By opening the sliding windows at the foot of the side walls and the shutter at the end facades, it is possible to naturally ventilate the structure. When everything is closed, the heat accumulated at the top can be effectively ventilated by the large air volume exhaust fan. The ceiling is laid with glass wool boards that provide sound absorption and heat insulation with a crumpled stainless steel mesh as finish, creating a comfortable space even in a temporary gymnasium.
