This group of buildings is for those still displaced due to the Tohoku earthquake and the subsequent nuclear accident, with the goal of taking Fukushima prefecture from temporary housing towards reconstruction and to support urban planning. It is an activity base of the organization founded by volunteers among people involved in architecture both inside and outside the prefecture, with core members NANBA Kazuhiko, SHIMAKAGE Kenichi, YAGI Sachiko, URABE Tomoyoshi, Haryu Wood Studio.corp. (NPO Fukushima housing and urban development network/ Fukushima sumai・machidzukuri network). 4 wooden construction detached houses connected through a central courtyard become a small-scale community model. Each building adopts a dismantling/rebuilding wooden construction method with a view to apply it to housing restoration. The reconstruction model is made using locally produced WOOD.ALC. It is expected to be used for the NPO meetings and events. All interior and exterior walls, load-bearing walls , columns, and horizontal structure members are made of 120mm thick WOOD.ALC panels , with glass and doors inserted between the panels.
In 2012 we designed a small library for the evacuees in Namie town, Fukushima with the same goal and construction method, this time we tried a permanent version. Because WOOD.ALC has been certified for its exterior wall fireproof performance, the wood panels could be used as both interior and exterior walls to create a natural space. A small room inside is provided for environment regulation equipment, furthermore, it can be customized by changing the materials inside. When the day comes, it’s possible to relocate the building. We wanted to propose this kind of architecture that you can have attachment to.
