‘EnTree’ is a school building for the newly established Department of Architecture at the Shizuoka Institute of Science and Technology. Taking advantage of being the first comprehensive architecture department in Shizuoka prefecture and becoming a base for regional collaboration of universities to foster talented people who contribute to the region, the architecture department school building itself is an ‘ENGAWA’ = architecture that aims at becoming the point of contact with society. The university campus is as it were ‘everyone`s residence’, students and faculty members spend the whole day there. It becomes a very important place for the people living there and for the area. We aimed to create a campus where students can study society through regional cooperation. We carefully read the composition of existing buildings and landscape to create a building shape that makes the most of existing axes. A ‘space under large eaves’ is set along the central axis of the campus mall, creating a new plaza where students, teachers and local residents meet daily - a place where people and things meet. Also, to make the architecture itself a living teaching material we deliberately exposed elements of structure and equipment, and purposefully incorporated a variety of design motifs. With a theme of ‘learning light’, the lighting environment is set to match each space, intentionally diversifying lighting methods, light source types and their color temperature.
